Why people book deep tissue

Deep tissue massage works more slowly and with more pressure than a relaxation massage. Your therapist warms the muscle with oil, then sinks into the layers underneath with thumbs, knuckles and forearms, staying on the tight spots long enough for them to let go.

Around Grand Central most of our guests come in with the same pattern: a stiff neck from looking down at a screen, shoulders lifted towards the ears, and a lower back that complains after a long day sitting. Deep tissue is made for that pattern.

What to expect

  • We ask first. Where it hurts, how long it has felt that way, and how much pressure you enjoy.
  • Warm-up, then depth. The first part relaxes the area so the firm work feels good rather than defensive.
  • Focus where you need it. You can ask us to spend most of the session on neck and shoulders, or on the lower back and hips.
  • Honest pressure. "Good pain" is fine; sharp pain is not. Say so and your therapist will adjust straight away.

It is normal to feel a little tender the next day, like after a good workout. Drink water and move gently.

Who it suits, and who should wait

Deep tissue suits people with ongoing tightness who like firm pressure. If you are new to massage or simply want to unwind, start with Swedish or our Combination massage instead.

Please skip deep tissue, or check with your doctor first, if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, have a recent injury or surgery, varicose veins in the area, a skin condition, or a fever. Tell us about any of these when you book.

How long to book

60 minutes works for one or two problem areas. Choose 90 minutes if you want both the upper and lower back done properly, or if you carry tension everywhere.

Questions

Will I be sore afterwards?

Some people feel mild tenderness for a day. It should feel like a good workout, never like an injury.

Can you focus on just my neck and shoulders?

Yes. Tell your therapist at the start and they will spend most of the session there.

Is deep tissue the same as sports massage?

They overlap. Sports massage adds stretching and targets muscles used in training; deep tissue focuses on long-held tension.
