What a Thai massage feels like

Thai massage is the oldest style on our menu and the one our studio is built around. You change into loose cotton clothes we provide, and your therapist works along the body's energy lines with palms, thumbs, forearms and feet. Between the pressure work come assisted stretches: your therapist moves your legs, hips, back and shoulders through ranges you rarely reach on your own.

It is active and calm at the same time. Most guests describe the first ten minutes as "waking up" and the rest as slowly melting. You leave feeling longer and lighter rather than oily and sleepy.

What happens in a session

  • A short check-in. Tell us where you hold tension, any injuries, and how firm you like it.
  • Feet and legs first. Thai work usually starts at the feet and moves up, opening the hips before the back.
  • Back, shoulders and neck. Rhythmic pressure along the spine, then stretches for the shoulders and a quiet finish on the neck and head.
  • Hot towel and tea. You get a few minutes to come back to the room before you head out to 43rd Street.

Who it suits

Thai massage suits people who sit for long hours, people who feel stiff more than sore, runners and gym-goers who want mobility, and anyone who would rather keep their clothes on. Because there is no oil, it is an easy choice before a meeting or dinner.

When to choose something else

If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery, or have a recent injury, a joint replacement, osteoporosis, a blood-clotting condition or a fever, please talk to your doctor first and tell us when you book. In many of those cases a gentle Swedish massage is the better fit. If you mainly want to relax rather than stretch, try Swedish or Aromatherapy.

How long to book

60 minutes covers the full body at a steady pace. 90 minutes is our favourite length for Thai, because it leaves time for the slow stretches that make the style special. 120 minutes is for the days you want to switch your phone off completely.

Questions

Do I need to bring clothes?

No. We give you loose cotton clothes to change into, and there is space to leave your things.

Does Thai massage hurt?

It should not. Some stretches feel intense in a good way, and you can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any time.

Is there oil?

No oil is used in traditional Thai massage. If you want oil, book our Combination, Swedish or Deep Tissue massage.
