Heat that goes deeper
In a hot stone massage your therapist uses smooth, warmed basalt stones as an extension of their hands. The stones glide along the muscles with warm oil, and some are rested on the back, in the palms or along the legs while other areas are worked on. Heat softens tight muscle, so you get the feeling of deep work without needing very hard pressure.
On a cold New York day it is hard to beat.
What to expect
- Temperature check. Stones are heated in water and tested before they touch you. If anything feels too hot, say so and it comes off immediately.
- Oil and stones together. Long strokes with the stones, mixed with hands-on massage for the detail work.
- A slow finish. The last stones are taken away gradually so you do not lose the warmth all at once.
Who it suits
Hot stone suits people who feel cold and stiff, people who want deep relaxation without strong pressure, and anyone with general aches from a long week.
Who should choose another massage
Heat is not right for everyone. Please choose a different massage, or ask your doctor first, if you are pregnant, have diabetes or reduced feeling in the skin, high blood pressure, heart conditions, varicose veins, recent sunburn, skin conditions, or are taking blood thinners. Tell us when you book.
How long to book
Hot stone takes a little longer to settle into, so 75 or 90 minutes gives the best result. 60 minutes still works well if you are fitting it into a lunch break.
Questions
Are the stones very hot?
They are warm, not burning, and checked before use. Tell your therapist at once if anything feels too hot.
Why does hot stone cost more?
It takes extra preparation, equipment and cleaning time for each guest.
Can I add hot stones to another massage?
Ask when you book. When the stones are free we can sometimes add a little stone work.
